Paul Dickov is delighted to have uncovered a gem which has helped his side to their best run of form so far this season.

Rovers have come from behind in their last two League One away games after switching to a diamond formation, helping them to a run of just one defeat in five.

And at Rochdale on Saturday, it produced some of Rovers’ best attacking play of the season.

“We’ve worked a lot in training on switching to a diamond in midfield if we have to,” Dickov told the Star.

“We did it the other week at Bradford when we put Harry Forrester in behind the front two.

“When Rochdale scored on Saturday, we decided after five or six minutes that we were going to change.

“It keeps the two centre forwards up top, occupying their centre halves.

“And I thought Kyle Bennett was outstanding in the hole.

“It also gives a freer role to Richie Wellens and James Coppinger to go and join in.

“And you’ve still got the security of Paul Keegan in behind.

“It suited us in the second half at Bradford and it did it again for the majority of the game at Rochdale.”

Both Bennett and Wellens were outstanding as part of a highly fluid Rovers midfield at Spotland.

Bennett in particular thrived after retaining his place in the starting line-up from the FA Cup clash with Weston-Super-Mare.

Dickov said: “Kyle had a couple of assists in the cup, he hit the post last week against Sheffield United.

“He hit the post again at Rochdale and got his goal which he’s deserved with his work for us lately.”

“When Kyle is on form he is very hard to play against.”
