Doncaster Rovers: Need for speed drives Dickov’s striker hunt

Rovers are looking to sign a pacy forward after Theo Robinson was ruled out for two months.

Paul Dickov hopes to snap up a striker with pace before the trip to Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

With Theo Robinson ruled out for up to two months, an attacking speedster is top of Dickov’s priority list as he looks to follow up yesterday’s signing of Abdoulaye Meite.

The list of targets the Rovers boss has drawn up contains both experienced forwards and young Premier League talent he revealed.

“You’re not always going to get your first target or even your second,” Dickov said.

“We’re hopeful that we will and we’re trying.

“With Theo being out we need a bit of pace to stretch teams in behind.

“We play a lot of good football but a lot of time it’s in front of teams. With Theo in the team it gives us a bit of a different outlet so we want to try and get players in who will get in behind.”

Should the potential striker sign, he would be the second of the two targets Dickov was handed the funds to pursue.

Aside from a new deal for Richie Wellens, the first was Ivory Coast international Meite, who penned a deal until the end of the season.

For any further signings, Dickov must generate the funds by moving players on, something which he is confident will happen soon, particularly following a bid from Scunthorpe for David Syers.

Dickov said: “They’ve given me money for Richie and Abdou, we’re looking at a centre forward at the minute and then after that it’ll be my job to get a few out.

“It’s not all take, take, take – I’ve got to balance the books as well.

“Scunthorpe have contacted us with a bid for Dave Syers and it might be something we do so we can get someone else in. If we can do the deal we will, if not we will happily have him here.

“There might be one or two out pre-weekend and maybe a few more next week.”

It seems increasingly unlikely any new forward will be joined at Rovers by former loanee Federico Macheda, certainly in the near future.

Dickov said: “Kiko is out of contract in the summer so United would prefer to try and get a fee for him which is something we can’t do.

“If he is to go back out on loan we’re in pole position for that but I wouldn’t imagine it would be imminent.”
