Jack McKay and Liam Mandeville are not yet ready for the cut and thrust of League One football, according to Rob Jones.
Uche Ikpeazu’s cancelled loan has re-opened the first team door for the promising strike duo.
But Jones says the youth team pair are in the right place playing for Rovers’ under 21s.
“They’re young boys so they are still learning the game,” said under 21 boss Jones.
“They are still learning how to do things and how to play against big centre halves.
“Jack’s a number nine who has an eye for goal, is good in the air and has a turn of pace.
“Some of the things Liam does with the ball are mesmerizing at times. He’s got a great football brain.
“But it’s difficult when you come up from the youth team to get up to the pace of the first team. It takes you a little while.
“They’ve got every chance but they have to keep on improving. The under 21s is the right place for them right now.
“Men’s football is completely different to these under 18s and under 21s games,” he added.
“It’s that step so they blend into it. It’s my role as under 21s coach to get them ready for first team football.
“They will be ready eventually, but now they’re still learning their trade.”
