Luke McCullough is on standby for Doncaster’s derby showdown with Barnsley.
The 19-year-old centre back made a whirlwind Rovers debut against Brighton - replacing injured skipper Rob Jones at the eleventh hour.
He was left out of Monday’s 2-0 reserve team defeat at Mansfield on Monday night and could now be thrust into Rovers’ biggest game of the season at Oakwell.
Boss Paul Dickov is sweating on the results of a scan on Jones who was injured in the warm up on Saturday.
Jones was left with no feeling in the arm he injured at Reading last month - and could face a stint on the sidelines if any nervous damage is confirmed by experts.
Dickov will attempt to raid the loan market if Jones’ injury will keep him out for a prolonged period.
But with the international break looming he will also be tempted to show faith in McCullough and reassess his options during the fortnight’s break.
McCullough, who had previously played just 45 minutes of senior football while on loan at Cheltenham from Manchester United last season, impressed Dickov given the circumstances of his debut.
“For a young kid coming straight in, without the possible mental preparation he could have had, I thought he did well,” said Rovers’ boss.
“He was up against two good players and he grew into the game as it went on.”
