Brazilian full back Felipe Mattioni comes highly recommended by Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

The 27-year-old, whose career has been ravaged by injuries, joined Doncaster Rovers on loan until January last week and could make his debut against Stalybridge Celtic in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Mattioni, who lists Espanyol, Mallorca and AC Milan among his former clubs, signed a deal with Everton until the end of the season following a trial and was immediately loaned to Doncaster.

He has made just 22 appearances since 2010 after suffering back-to-back cruciate knee ligament injuries.

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson said: “Felipe’s a good player.

“Roberto has highly recommended him so you have to go with that one because he’s a good experienced manager.

“His CV’s quite outstanding really. His last game was against Real Madrid for Espanyol and his first game for us might be against Stalybridge. So that’s interesting. It’s a bit of a contrast!

“He’s a good technician. He’s a full back but he can play as a wing back too.

“He fits with how Roberto [Martinez] wants to get his full backs up and down, and that’s similar to what we want to do.

“He’s obviously had his injury problems but he is very good technically.”

Mattioni followed in the footsteps of young Everton midfielder Conor Grant who scored on his Doncaster debut at the weekend after joining on a month’s loan last week.

Ferguson hopes to sign another defender on loan before the weekend.

“I’m still trying to get another defender in, that result [on Saturday] won’t change that,” he said.

“Obviously then I’ll have five loan players in and I’m only allowed to select five, so really one more defender is probably going to be it then.”
