Mark Duffy has activated a relegation release clause to join Birmingham City.

The 28-year-old successfully passed a medical at St Andrew’s today and joins the Blues on a two-year deal.

Duffy signed a three-year contract at Rovers last summer after arriving from Scunthorpe United.

He initially struggled down to hold a regular place and also ended the season on the fringes of the starting eleven, as Paul Dickov preferred David Cotterill and James Coppinger.

But the winger showed enough quality to persuade Birmingham boss Lee Clark into handing him an instant return to the Championship following Rovers’ relegation, and to lose him for nothing represents a frustrating start to Dickov’s summer squad rebuilding plans.

Duffy’s departure leaves Doncaster with 12 players contracted for next season.

Earlier this morning Duffy tweeted: “Lovely seeing the new fixtures interesting times #freshstart.”
