John Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s partnership could help Rovers return to the Championship, a supporters’ club chairman believes.

It was expected that a conclusion to takeover talks would take place on last Friday, however, that was put on hold following issues relating to One Direction popstar Tomlinson’s image rights.

People connected with the club, including defender Luke McCullough and former winger John Buckley, have openly backed the multi-millionaire pair’s proposals.

And now Paul Mayfield, the Doncaster Rovers Supporters’ Club’s Retford branch chairman, has offered his support.

He hopes the takeover will help Rovers return to the second tier of English football.

And Mayfield also warned about the implications of repeating last year’s takeover “debacle” when Sequentia Capital talks eventually fell through following a lengthy period of negotiation with the club.

“I am in favour of the takeover plans,” said Mayfield.

“I think injection of cash and the passion for the club shown by John and Louis will hopefully get us back in contention for the return to the Championship.

“Although money does not initially buy success, Paul Dickov will be able to know what budget he can work within.

“We do not want a repeat of last season’s takeover debacle.

“We just need to get the town behind the club and put bums on seats.”
