Doncaster Rovers: ‘I think we’ve got two of the best keepers in the league’ - Ferguson lifts lid on battle to be number one at the Keepmoat

Marko Marosi’s form during his recent run between the sticks has shown Doncaster Rovers have two of the League One’s best goalkeepers.

That is the verdict of boss Darren Ferguson who is delighted with Marosi’s performances since surprisingly replacing Ian Lawlor in the starting XI a month ago.

Lawlor looked to have a stranglehold on the starting shirt since arriving from Manchester City last January when Marosi looked to have suffered a serious injury.

Ferguson says he would not have looked to sign a keeper of Lawlor’s ability had Marosi not been injured last year.

But he says Rovers are all the better for it.

“There is a strong possibility at the time that we wouldn’t have got Ian in if Marko hadn’t got injured,” he told The Star,

“He was doing ever so well last season.

“Sometimes it works out as a bit of a blessing. For me, Marko getting injured meant we brought Lawsy in.

“And I think we’ve got two of the best goalkeepers in the league. I really do.”

Marosi has started the last six games for Rovers since Ferguson opted to give Lawlor a break.

Rovers have lost just once in that period, keeping four clean sheets.

And Ferguson has praised the former Slovakia U21 international for his contribution to that.

Speaking ahead of the weekend trip to MK Dons, Ferguson said: “He’s done very well.

“When I did leave Ian out, it was for the Fleetwood game, and I didn’t make the decision until the Saturday morning. It was quite late. Normally I would have made it before then.

“I think I just went with what my gut was telling me that it was time for Lawsy to have a break.

“Fortunately we won the game and he got a clean sheet, which for a goalkeeper is massive.

“He’s done very well.

“Marko is a very good goalkeeper.

“It’s a difficult decisions for me.

“I think Lawsy is a top, top goalkeeper and Marko is up there with him.

“It’s a good problem to have.

“Marko has deserved to keep the shirt, there’s no doubt about that.

“We’ll see what happens for the last seven games.”
