Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson does not rule out permanent move for Stewart

Darren Ferguson has not ruled out the possibility of signing Cameron Stewart on a permanent basis.

The 24-year-old winger - on loan at Rovers until January 2 - has been told he has no future at parent club Ipswich Town.

Stewart is contracted to the Tractor Boys until the summer of 2017 and his wages could prove to be a stumbling block.

But when asked by The Star if signing Stewart permanently was a possibility, Ferguson did not rule it out.

“Possibly,” Ferguson replied.

“I think it would probably be better for the lad if it was a permanent. He’s had a few seasons now where he’s been an impact player and he obviously wants to play more football.

“He’s never given me a moment’s problem though. We had a chat about it last week.

“I haven’t made my mind up. That’s not just because of Cameron and what he’s done but because I need to look at the whole thing, in terms of what loan players might go back and will we keep the Everton boys?”

He added: “He’s done really well when he’s come off the bench of late, and he’s given me a real problem not only for Saturday but obviously his loan’s coming up.

“I thought he was positive when he came on [against Crewe] and he did well in one on ones. It was real quality for the free kick.”

Stewart has been told he can leave Ipswich.

Town boss Mick McCarthy said: “Take his (Stewart’s) appearance record since he’s been here, he’s not going to play. He’s got to go somewhere else.

“He knows that, by the way. I wish him well and I hope he’s doing well at Doncaster and he can find a club that he fits in with and where he plays well and he ends up progressing and has a good career.”
