DONCASTER Rovers were represented on the world stage last night when El Hadji Diouf starred in an exhibition match for the Friends of Libya’s Children.
Diouf was given special permission by Rovers to line-up alongside Italian World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro and Argentine striker Hernan Crespo - among plenty of other world stars - for the charity match in Dubai.
Rovers’ latest signing, who scored his first goals in Rovers colours at Ipswich on Saturday, will return to training at Cantley Park later this week.
The Senegalese striker was among an array of world famous names from the past and present to turn out to raise funds for children in need of medical aid following the conflict in Libya.
World Cup winner Marcelo Lippi and former Italian keeper Walter Zenga managed the two teams – as a Coca Cola sponsored side beat the Abu Dhabi investment Bank 8-5 in an entertaining game.
Libyan striker Zuwei scored a hat trick for the winners, while Diouf set up one of two goals for Crespo.
Czech internationals Pavel Nedved and Jan Koller, Argentine defender Javier Zanetti, former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires, Italian Marco Matterazzi, Chilean Luis Jimenez and Japan’s Hidetoshi Nakata also played in the game.
Diouf said: “It was an honour to be invited to play and I hope we raised a lot of money for a very important cause.”
