Doncaster Rovers: Dickov wants Macheda back after Manchester United return

Paul Dickov wants to extend Federico Macheda’s loan spell at Rovers – but is resigned to losing the striker for a while after New Year’s Day.

Macheda’s deal expires following the trip to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday and Dickov has already been informed that parent club Manchester United want him to report back to Old Trafford.

But the Rovers boss is working to ensure the striker’s next journey will bring him back to Rovers.

“The situation with Kiko (Macheda) is slightly different from the other players,” Dickov said.

“We’ve been told by United that they want to take their loan players back in for a bit to assess them.

“Hopefully we can get him back out after that.

“We’re definitely looking at that.”

Macheda has been somewhat disappointing since returning to Doncaster following a hamstring injury which cut short his stay.

Dickov believes expectations should be managed when it comes to the Italian who burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion with United in 2009.

He said: “I think we’ve got to remember sometimes that although he comes in with a big reputation, Kiko is still only 22 and he’s not got bags of first team experience.

“I think also the injury took more out of him than we thought at first.

“He had six weeks out and came back to play a lot of games in a short space of time.

“But there were signs against Millwall when he came off the bench that we had the old Kiko back, the one who came in and started really well for us.

“He was bright, he was clever on the ball and he looked a lot more of a threat.”

Dickov also confirmed he hopes to extend the loans of full backs Enda Stevens and Yun Suk Young, who is ineligible for the clash with parent club QPR.
