Paul Dickov has urged Rovers’ board to tie Reece Wabara down on a longer term deal.

The former Manchester City defender’s current deal expires on December 31.

Wabara has been one of Doncaster’s stand-out performers this season, impressing at right back, left back and centre back.

And Dickov has put a longer term deal for the 22-year-old to the top of his wish-list.

“We want to keep Reece here,” said Rovers’ boss.

“We need to sit Reece down and have a chat.

“It’s something I’ve spoken to the board about.

“He’s a big asset to us and the age he’s at, he’s only going to get better.”

Wabara’s defensive versatility has come as no surprise to Dickov.

He said: “When we first put him in the middle at Watford it raised a few eyebrows but Reece has played that position for me before. He was fantastic at Fulham too.

“Although he may not be the tallest, he’s got a good spring and he’s very, very quick. He covers well and reads the game well.

“When we put him at right back, as well as being a good defender, he’s an attacking threat for us as well.

“He’s played every minute since he’s come back in,” he added.

“That says a lot about his attitude and how he looks after himself. He’s naturally very fit. The more games he gets, the better he is going to get.”
