Doncaster Rovers: Dickov expects new strike pairing to gel quick Sharp

Paul Dickov has played down concerns that Billy Sharp and Chris Brown will suffer from a clash of styles should they pair up to form the Rovers attack.

Both men have earned reputations as battlers who like to drop deep to claim the ball.

But Dickov expects the two to gel together well and insists all along he was looking for a striker who would compliment Brown.

“I think they will compliment each other really well,” he said. “We needed someone who would compliment Browny and that was one of our targets.

“Billy will feed off him very well and create space for Browny and visa versa.

“They are both hard workers which is a given with me, especially with the way we want to play.

“The one Browny has needed is a little bit of help up there sometimes.

“He flogs himself every game.

“He gets kicked from pillar to post but he keeps going.

“We needed to help him out a little bit and Billy will do that.”

Dickov admits he is looking forward to witnessing Sharp re-igniting the productive relationship with James Coppinger that was forged during his two previous spells.

And the Rovers boss believes Sharp will find similar strong service from other members of the midfield.

Dickov said: “The last time Billy was here, him and Copps had a fantastic relationship on the pitch.

“The two of them seemed to know what each other was going to do when they’d got the ball.

“There are other players as well no who I’m sure will work well with Billy.

“We’ve got Richie Wellens and players like Harry Forrester and Mark Duffy who are like-minded.

“Billy’s movement along with the players that we’ve got, we are sure it’ll work and it’ll work quickly.”

Sharp looks set to make his Rovers re-debut at Blackpool today.
