James Coppinger should be held up as an example to the football world according to Paul Dickov.

Coppinger yesterday agreed a new two-year deal with Rovers, which saw him take a wage cut to stay.

And Dickov believes such loyalty is a rare occurrence in the modern game.

“He’s made a big commitment to the club which is an example to everyone else in football,” Dickov told the Star.

“He wanted to stay. James could have gone elsewhere and earned more money but he’s shown his commitment to us and his loyalty which isn’t always there in football now.

“It’s a massive signing for the club. He’s not just a fantastic player, he’s a role model around the place.”

Dickov revealed James Husband’s switch to Middlesbrough played a big role in Coppinger remaining at Rovers.

But he insists there was a strong desire from both sides to get the deal done.

He said: “I always wanted James to stay and he wanted to stay as well.”
