The lure of an expected promotion push with Doncaster Rovers was too good to turn down according to returning loanee Riccardo Calder.

The Aston Villa midfielder joined on loan until January after impressing during his initial temporary stint towards the end of last season.

After confessing Rovers were not the only option for a loan move on the table, Calder said he is excited about a potential top-of-the-table battle at the Keepmoat this season.

“I could have gone to a few other teams but Doncaster are a good club,” he said. “I wouldn’t say they’re a League Two club.

“This season, hopefully we do well and get back up to League One. I want to be part of it.

“Last season was obviously a fight at the bottom, trying to stay up.

“It was a new experience for me last season and hopefully this will be a new one as well, fighting for promotion.”

Though highly-rated by Rovers boss Darren Ferguson, Calder says he is taking nothing for granted when it comes to regular starts.

After signing a new contract with parent club – freshly relegated to the Championship – the 20-year-old is determined to impress at Rovers enough over the next six months to force his way into the first team at Villa Park.

“I thought I did well when I finished the season here,” Calder said.

“But it’s a new season, with new signings so it’s a fresh start for everyone.

“It’s up to me to lay down a marker whenever I get to play.

“I want to be pushing for the first team back at Villa and if not, I want to be pushing here.”

n Rovers are holding their bi-annual Meet The Owners event at the Keepmoat tonight (7pm).
