Doncaster Rovers have appointed Darren Ferguson as the club's new manager.

The former Peterborough United boss has succeeded Paul Dickov as the club's new boss and has been appointed on a one-year rolling contract.

"I'm delighted to be here and delighted to be announced as manager," the 43-year-old said.

"I'm looking forward to it. it's a challenge but it's an exciting challenge.

"We want to be a Championship club, get our Championship status and that is clear is from the talks I've had. It's clear from what I have said to them what I expect.

"Whether that is short term or long term, we will wait and see.

"The football club is a good, sound football club. It's well respected, well-run and that is known throughout football. That was one of the attractions.

"During my break, there's things you look at what you want out of a football club.

"Until you meet the actual people in charge., you don't know.

"But when we met on Monday, our philosophies and visions completely matched and that was the most telling factor in all this."

Son of legendary manager Sir Alex, Ferguson achieved back-to-back promotions with Peterborough United, guiding them from League Two to the Championship in 2009.

He was dismissed in November 2009 but was appointed Preston North End manager in January 2010. After leaving Deepdale that December, he returned to Peterborough in January 2011 and guided Posh to promotion for a third time via the play-offs.

Ferguson started his playing career with Manchester United and made 30 appearances for the Red Devils as a midfielder.

He went on to play with Wolverhampton Wanderers after a £250,000 switch but spent most of his career at Wrexham, for whom he made more than 330 appearances.

Ferguson is set to bring in an assistant - understood to be current Ilkeston coach Gavin Strachan - but will continue to work with the current backroom staff at the club.
