ROVERS’ under 18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup with their heads held high after giving Premier League giants Chelsea a genuine scare.
Doncaster defender Liam Wakefield nodded home a free kick from the right in just the second minute to stun the Blues in front of a crowd 482 at Staines Town.
But Chelsea, who reached the final last season and won the competition in 2010, responded almost immediately.
Islam Feruz got to the byline and crossed for unmarked midfielder Jon Swift to send a shot past Rovers keeper Jonathan Maxted.
Maxted kept the scores level with an acrobatic save to deny Feruz but as the game wore on Chelsea’s extra quality eventually told.
Brazilian Lucas Piazon was given room to gracefully dribble to the edge of the area where his drilled effort deflected past Maxted to complete Chelsea’s comeback.
Jordan Ball saw his overhead kick saved by Jamal Blackman as Rovers tried in vain to get back into the game - but despite the third round defeat Paul Stancliffe’s side will take a lot of heart from their display.
