EVERYTHING that could go wrong for Doncaster Rovers did go wrong as they slumped to a tenth away defeat of the season at Turf Moor.

Sam Hird was harshly adjudged to have fouled Chris McCann which gave Jay Rodriguez the chance to slam home a 37th minute spot kick for the Clarets.

Billy Sharp saw his glanced header from Brian Stock's cross hit the post before half time before a late Martin Paterson effort and Hird own goal rubbed salt in Rovers' wounds.

Giles Barnes wasted a good opportunity to level before the interval when he side-footed wide from close range.

And James Coppinger had earlier seen a superb dipping volley from 25 yards tipped around the post by Burnley keeper Lee Grant with the scores still level.

But Doncaster were left with that very familiar sinking feeling on their travels when Paterson reacted first to nod home on 84 minutes after Rodriguez's attempt had came back off the bar.

And Hird's miserable afternoon was complete when he could only turn Rodriguez's header back across the face of goal into his own net to cap a forgettable Boxing Day for him and his team-mates.
