BREAKING: Ilkeston FC head coach Gavin Strachan leaves to join up with Darren Ferguson at Doncaster Rovers

Ilkeston FC head coach Gavin Strachan has left the club to become assistant manager to Darren Ferguson at Doncaster Rovers.

It is understood Rovers have paid the Robins a substantial compensation payment for Strachan’s services, the 36-year-old having decided to team up once again with Ferguson after the pair previously worked together at Peterborough United.

Ilkeston assistant manager Andy Watson will take charge of the team on an interim basis, starting with this weekend’s visit of Buxton.

Strachan joined Ilkeston in May following the departure of Kevin Wilson. A highly-rated coach and holder of a UEFA Pro Licence, the role at the New Manor Ground was his first head coach position.

Ferguson and Strachan were, along with other coaching staff, relieved of their roles at Peterborough in February and this is Ferguson’s first managerial position since.

Interim manager Watson has vast experience in the game having been assistant manager at the highest level in Scotland and England with the likes of Glasgow Rangers and Birmingham City, as well as with the Scotland national team.
