Doncaster Rovers: Steve Evans laughs off link to Rovers job

Steve Evans has laughed off speculation linking him with the managerial vacancy at Doncaster Rovers.

The Gillingham boss has spent much of the fortnight since Grant McCann’s departure from the Keepmoat positioned as the bookies’ favourite for the job.

This came despite assurances there has been no contact between the club and the former Leeds United and Rotherham United chief.

And he reaffirmed the lack of contact when speaking to Kent Live about the speculation.

“I did have a bit of a chuckle to myself about it,” the 56-year-old said.

“It probably only came from the fact that I was in Yorkshire for a while when I was at Leeds and I had been very successful time at Rotherham. It can only have come from around that.

“There has certainly been no contact from me to them or them to me. It is just a completely random story but I am looking forward to playing them on the opening day.

“I took Mansfield there when they won promotion under Darren Ferguson a couple of seasons ago. It is a club I really like but there is no truth in it whatsoever.”

Evans only took charge of the Gills in mid-May.

Rovers meanwhile expect to appoint their new manager next week after chief executive Gavin Baldwin confirmed interviews will begin on Monday. READ MORE
