A lacklustre performance against Leicester City U21 in the Leasing.com Trophy compounded matters and had supporters expressing their worries on social media afterwards.

@Ady2408 wrote: “I really dont like being critical of the boys but after the weekend and tonight's performance it just seems like our performances at the minute are lethargic at best! We are so far away from the performances at the beginning of the season. I must say I'm concerned.”

And others, including @djoftherovers were pointing the finger squarely at the manager. “The bloke came with a great reputation but watching the teams he puts out is painful. He had time in window to make changes, the ones we needed desperately but wasted the chance. This is going to be a long season.”

@Markhughes82: “Start of December average league form and out of all cup competitions , Not exactly doing a grant McCann is DM but I’ll keep following them Reds.”

He added: “Got a feeling we’re hitting a bad run of form on all fronts at moment.”

@Orrie2014: “There is something defo not right. There was no skill or fight about that team tonight. Need a good Jan window and to get some quality in. Could be a relegation battle on our current form otherwise.”

@VikingWay_: “Rovers need to massively buck their ideas up now ahead of a massive month. How disappointing that fringe players don’t grasp the opportunity tonight.”

@Gazz_Long: “Shipping goals and not creating chances. Honeymoon period over for Big Dave. Need to find a win to build on.”

@josh_dainty: “Two back-to-back 3-0 defeats for #DRFC. Please don’t let this be the start of something.”

@daniel_nice7 picked up on a quite major point that has certainly hampered Rovers this season, writing: “Admittedly it doesn’t really matter tonight but #drfc have gone behind in so many games this season. We’ve got to turn that around if we’re going to kick on.”

Before adding the stats to back it up: “L1: Gone 1-0 down 10/15 (1 0-0); FAC: 2/3; League Cup: 1/1; leasing.com: 3/4; Total: 16/23. We’ve also gone behind more than once in a game i.e. Burton.”

@brigrainger: “Lots of Rovers players with a max rating of 5 out of ten tonight though I would make one exception unfortunately Lawlor 3.”

Some supporters however did not read too much into the defeat as a one-off game.

@MattyGarland wrote: “Not a***d about this cup anyway, never attended a game since they changed the format. Just shows our fringe players aren’t good enough which we knew anyway.”

@DRFC_ITEN wrote: “Tonight's game was not important, the EFL Trophy has been ruined by the governing body. So let's move on swiftly and focus on getting back on track in the league this weekend.”
