The club have been braced for strong interest in the 24-year-old this summer after another excellent campaign with Rovers.

But so far no bids have met the club’s valuation of the midfielder and chief executive Baldwin said it will take an ‘exceptional’ offer to prise him away.

“We’ve had calls but all of them have been turned down,” Baldwin told the Free Press.

“We’ve had written offers and the board have turned them down.

“The board’s position is that it would have to be an exceptional offer to make it happen.

“They totally understand that if Ben was offered progression that was unbelievable, we’re not the sort of club that would want to stand in his way.

“Having said that, it has to be a case with the financials that Darren [Moore, manager] sits down and says he can improve the team with the money.

“The offers have not given us the ability to do that so they have been turned down.”

Rovers rejected a significant seven figure bid for Whiteman last summer and it is understood that more than a dozen clubs have been tracking the captain over the last 12 months.

Whiteman’s previous club Sheffield United stand to receive a percentage of any agreed transfer fee, with a sell-on clause inserted into his permanent switch across South Yorkshire in January 2018.
