Doncaster Rovers players to call vulnerable people during coronavirus crisis

Doncaster Rovers players will join with the wider Club Doncaster staff in making telephone calls to vulnerable people in the borough throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Club Doncaster have announced a range of measures to offer help and assistance to members of the public as social distancing and self-isolation measures are increasingly implemented.

That includes staff - including players and coaches at the club - taking time out of their days to make contact with older people in the community, while also offering assistance to those with mental health problems during what is set to be a difficult period.

The Keepmoat Stadium will also act as a drop-off point for foodbank supplies as the club looks to help keep the services in town stocked.

A statement from the club read: “To support the older members of our community who are being asked to self-isolate for 12 weeks, players, staff and management from across Club Doncaster will be donating an hour every day alongside Doncaster-based charity b:friend to ensure the welfare of the older members of our community this will include making phone calls to those with limited social contact.

“Self-isolation is a daunting prospect for those with anxiety and other mental health problems in which routine and socialising plays a big part in controlling symptoms.

“We will be working closely with our partners Mind and CALM in order to assist where we can.”

The level of foodbank donations have dropped significantly since the outbreak began in Britain while panic buying across the country means essential items are not freely available.

Those wishing to donate non-perishable food and toiletries can drop off items at any reception area at the Keepmoat, plus the club shop and box office.

The club has pledged to offer an expression of gratitude to local NHS staff once the worst of the crisis has passed.

And it will help to spread messages and advice from health authorities and the government in a bid to ensure people in the borough have the latest vital information.
