Doncaster Rovers: McCann sees La Manga trip as chance to lay out his plans

The Doncaster Rovers squad may have only spent a few hours with new boss Grant McCann so far but they will certainly know all about him by the end of this week.

Rovers head for their summer training camp in La Manga, Spain today.

And while hard work on fitness will be the order of the day, McCann himself is prioritising getting to know his new charges following his arrival as manager last week.

“I think it’s perfect to come into introduce myself and my assistant manager during this week a bit more,” he told The Star.

“And also to sit down individually with each player as the week goes on to get to know them.

“That is really important and I think once it is over, the boys will understand me a lot more.”

While he will take time out to speak with players individually, McCann has also planned in three major group meetings, each with a specific theme.

By the end of the third, he hopes his squad will understand exactly what he expects from the team on how they conduct themselves both on and off the pitch.

“The plan for the week is we’ll get there Monday afternoon and have a session in the evening. From there it’s two to three sessions each day.

“I’ll have three meetings with the group.

“I’m not one who wants to bring players into the meeting rooms all the time.

“But it’ll be three meetings.

“One will be on how we want to play. The players will understand everything about their role in the team.

“The second will be about our expectations, and what I expect from each individual and the team as a whole.

“The third one will be about the culture of the football club, which it already has got.

“I’m talking about standards, discipline and everything it takes to be successful in this league.

“Hard work is right at the top of it.”

Joining Rovers’ trip to La Manga will be new assistant manager Cliff Byrne, whose appointment was confirmed on Saturday.
