But reports suggesting Mark Warburton and David Hopkin have also been invited for interviews are wide of the mark.

The interview process began on Friday with six individuals receiving invitations to meet with club representatives at a location outside the borough.

Former Bradford City boss McCall – a long time favourite with bookmakers – is among those six.

McCall – who twice guided Motherwell to second placed finishes in the Scottish top flight – was sacked by the Bantams in February despite the club sitting sixth in League One.

Reports by a national newspaper in Scotland suggest McCall would be interviewed along with former Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Rangers boss Warburton plus Hopkin, who resigned as manager of Livingston last month after guiding them to back-to-back promotions.

But neither Warburton nor Hopkin were among the half dozen set for interviews either on Friday or Monday.

Rovers are not expected to confirm the appointment of a new manager until the middle of next week at the earliest but remain confident they will have their man in place before the start of pre-season on June 25.

The club learned their first confirmed fixture of the new campaign as Rovers were drawn away to neighbours Scunthorpe United in the Carabao Cup first round.

It was a local derby which took place four times last season with two league fixtures plus ties in the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy.

The first round tie will take place during the week commencing August 13.
