The pacy 22-year-old was part of a major clearout at Shrewsbury Town at the end of the season, with boss Steve Cotterill opting to give himself a largely blank canvas to work from.

But Rovers boss Richie Wellens swooped in quickly to make his interest in the former Manchester United youth product known and has secured him as his third signing of the summer.

Williams joined United as a nine-year-old and progressed through the academy set up and earned a professional contract, eventually becoming a stalwart in the club’s U23 side.

Along the way he broke the British schools 100m sprint record previously held by Olympian Darren Campbell.

He departed Old Trafford two years ago and joined Shrewsbury, going on to make 97 appearances over the two campaigns.

He has yet to score his first goal in senior football.
