EFL clubs have voted to increase the number of subs permitted in matches due to concerns over potential injuries and fatigue arising within the congested season.

League One and League Two clubs will continue to be allowed to name up to seven substitutes on the bench for each match and use five.

Championship clubs will be permitted to name nine substitutes and use five.

These changes will be in place for the remainder of the season.

EFL clubs initially agreed with the wishes of Premier League clubs to return to three substitutions per game, after the number was upped to five during the summer restart, and confirmed that prior to the start of the current season.

The EFL board drew opinions from across their three divisions, with Championship clubs responding with a clear majority in favour of five substitutions.

Concerns over the workload for players has grown over the first two months of the season, with the avoidance of injuries proving a more difficult challenge.

Starting from Saturday, Rovers have 13 matches in a 45 day period. The length of the current campaign has been reduced by six weeks after it began late due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Clubs also expressed a desire for the changes to come into place immediately, rather than delaying until the midpoint of the season. And, as such, regulations have quickly been altered to permit five substitutions in matches after noon on Friday.
