“He believes in me and that’s a big thing,” Cole said.

“You go anywhere and you want the manager’s backing. If you’ve not got that then you probably won’t sign somewhere.

“I enjoyed my talk with him before I signed.

“Him playing at the level he’s played at, he’s seen players and he knows what he’s talking about. It was good for me.

“There’s a few parts of my game I need to develop and that is why I have come here to play for a manager like Darren.

“He’s been at that level a long time and he’s told me about areas where I need to improve and there’s little things he can help me with to get back to that level.”

The 24-year-old is determined to prove himself at Championship level having been denied opportunities at Wigan.

And he is confident he can contribute sufficiently to ensure he has the opportunity to do that with Rovers.

“My ambitions are to score goals and get back to the Championship and score goals there to see where that takes me,” he said.
