The striker was among three senior players released earlier this week after the club declined the opportunity to take up an extra year in his deal.

The Free Press understands the financial uncertainty brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic was a major factor in the decision not to extend the 25-year-old’s contract.

But Moore says Cole may be a player he will readdress should the outlook improve and his budget increase.

“With Devante we had to look at the structure of the team, the club where we’re at,” the Rovers boss told the Free Press.

“I’m not saying Devante cannot come back.

“It’s just at this moment in time whilst we have offered the contracts to the players we have, at the same time Devante is out there as a free agent and it could happen again.

“While we’re getting our heads together and looking at the structure of the club, we’ve had to let him know at this moment in time so we don’t keep him waiting on.

“That’s not to say we can’t go back in for him if things materialise over the next couple of weeks.”

Cole managed only nine appearances for Rovers after joining from Wigan Athletic in January, and failed to find the net.

He signed initially on a six month contract with the option of a further year.
