It was a question that was met with a deep sigh and the most slight of grins.

Why did Doncaster Rovers not reach their usual standards in the defeat at Shrewsbury Town?

Sat in his office at Cantley Park, three days on from the trip to Shropshire, Rovers boss Darren Moore is still not quite sure what went wrong for his side.

“The week in training was good, the travel, the overnight preparation - everything was as good as you’d want it preparing for a game,” he said, reflecting on the performance.

“Sometimes there’s things you can put it down to and there’s contributing factors towards it.

“But we just didn’t perform at the times we needed to.

“It’s like any man or woman in sport, when it’s time to perform you have to perform.

“Sometimes it doesn’t work that way for whatever reason but you still need to have that mentality that at 3 o’clock, you’re ready to perform.

“On day we just weren’t quite at it with the standards we’ve set.”

Moore admitted he felt plenty of frustration as he watched on and knew early at the New Meadow that his side were not at their usual levels but they could not click into gear.

And he has urged his players to quickly put things right against League One’s third placed side Wycombe Wanderers at the Keepmoat on Saturday.

“There were enough chances in the game for us to come away with the three points even though we played as poorly as we did,” he said. “I think that’s probably the big frustration really.

“We’ve done a lot of work thus far this season to put in a performance like that.

“Again, we regroup. There’s never a blame culture, it’s always a situation where we can learn in terms of going forward.

“And we need to because we’ve got another tough game on Saturday against Wycombe who are right up there. They’re an excellent team.

“We’re going to have to get back on form and get back to where we should be.”
