Darren Moore on tearing up plans again after fresh delay to Doncaster Rovers’ season

He had only brought his players back in training for a matter of hours before it was back to the drawing board for Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Moore.

The Rovers squad returned to training on Thursday for the first time since the suspension of competitive football due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With the suspension initially set until April 4, Moore had little choice but to prepare for the clash with Tranmere Rovers scheduled for that day.

But mere hours after concluding the training session with his squad, Moore received confirmation from the EFL that the football suspension had been put back to April 30 at the earliest.

That means Moore will be forced to draft new plans for his players over the next couple of days as he aims to keep them primed and ready for when matches do resume.

He said: “I wanted everyone to get away for last weekend but then I extended it for three more days.

“I brought them back on Thursday and they’ll be in Friday and Saturday morning to just train.

“But things are changing by the hour, not the day.

“We’ve been working towards the Tranmere game because that was the next one.

“But after we finished training on Thursday, Mary [Lally, secretary] came and said the EFL had released a statement saying more games had been suspended until April 30.

“Now, in the next 24 to 48 hours I’ll draw up and structure a way to deal with that with the staff and the players.

“Whether we like it or not, things are going to change. Training will change, fitness sessions will change because we’ve got to keep the squad fit and efficient until then.

“We have to keep them mentally and physically engaged.

“Every week, you’re preparing towards the next game and psychologically and mentally you’re preparing for that.

“All those things are gone now so from our perspective it’s completely different.

“Now, we’re working towards April 30. I thought we had two weeks and now it’s been put back.

“But even speaking now, in a matter of hours it could all change and affect all our lives again.”
