Heading into a game with Doncaster Rovers when sitting top of League One has proven to be a bad omen for a string of teams so far this season.

Both Ipswich Town and Lincoln City were dispatched by Rovers in impressive fashion after arriving at the Keepmoat in top spot.

So there will be little trepidation for Rovers when they head to Hull City on Wednesday night.

Explaining the impressive record against the division’s top teams is something boss Darren Moore insists he finds difficult.

And he says it has nothing to do with preparation.

“If I could put my finger on it then I would do,” he told the Free Press.

“Honestly, we do exactly the same for every team in how we prepare. The plan and detail is no different.

“Sometimes when the games start and the players have gone over the line, you’ve got two teams contesting it and how the game ebbs and flows, nobody knows.

“You have 22 players vying for the win and it’s how the game pans out.

“The detail and preparation is the same for any team and it will continue to be so.

“It’s the same for the game on Wednesday. We’ve prepared the same and we’ll go in battle.”

Moore does not feel his players have given anything extra in any of the matches against leading sides, which have also brought wins over Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth and a draw with Sunderland.

And he says the focus remains on delivering consistency across all matches.

“Sometimes you can look at a game and your eye will gauge that one or two have given extra,” Moore said.

“But then you look at the data and they match up with their stats from other games.

“It’s just the way the games ebb and flow.

“Obviously the mind is a big thing and the psychological side of things plays a big factor.

“But in terms of the performance, it is what it is.

“I’ve said it before that the biggest thing any sportsperson can add to their profession is consistency.

“It’s the ones that find the most consistency over time that comes out on top.

“It’s something you always try to work to in training, to find that consistency and take it into matchdays.”
