BUCKY’S BLOG: Rovers summer depends on budget and system

The future of the team is quite dependent on what system is used, because in the middle of the park it’s a long season.

I think Paul Dickov is quite big on the diamond, but it didn’t get the results.

The 4-1-4-1 was the most successful for me, where you have the protective midfielder, with two ahead of him, and two wingers.

I’d go back to it on Sunday against Scunthorpe because it works best when we play away from home. Although it’s difficult to do in front of your own supporters, it has got good results.

Looking ahead, I’m sure Dickov has pinpointed certain areas for improvement.

I’m interested to know what the script is with Rob Jones and his contract.

It’s very important that we get a goalscorer, it’s a prioirty.

I also don’t know what’s going to happen with Richie Wellens.

There are signs that his legs are going slightly, but he can still win you a game. With each year it’s going to get a little bit harder for him though.

I’d like to see him left further forward perhaps, and play three centre backs, with Coppinger and Enda Stevens operating as wing backs.

That way, there is two midfielders in the engine room, and Wellens can enjoy freedom.

Looking at the goalkeeper, it is not that Stephen Bywater isn’t the answer, but from an age perspective we might need another keeper for competition.

Reece Wabara’s contract is set to expire, does he want a move away? Is Mitchell Lund going to come into the side?

Andy Butler has signed and it’s no secret I’m a big fan. And Paul Keegan, I really rate him.

There has to be roles going forward for Kyle Bennett and Harry Forrester, they are great technicians with the ball. I like Bennett especially behind the striker.

Only one person can choose the system and pick the players, and if Forrester and Bennett both play, the central midfielders need to get up and down. Dean Furman can certainly do that, but like I say, it’ll get harder for Wellens.

Nathan Tyson is good but I’d like to see a prolific striker alongside him. I think we need some charisma like what we had with Billy Sharp, something for the fans to latch on to.

The manager seems to have faith in Curtis Main as he persists with him. He’s scored a few fantastic goals, but not enough. Does he need another year in this division to settle in and find his goalscoring touch? Maybe. But when you’re a striker it’s your job to come in and make an impact with goals.

The biggest question of the summer perhaps will also be what we have budget-wise.

The manager has his doubters and it’s the home form which has let him and the team down. But then you’ve also got to say we have one of the best away records in the league. There has to be a solution.
