The 21-year-old has signed a two-year contract with Rovers after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee. He is eligible to play in Saturday’s Carabao Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers.

The versatile defender spent last term on loan at the Keepmoat, making 21 appearances and scoring three goals.

The Free Press understands that part of the terms of the loan deal handed Rovers first refusal on a permanent signing of John, if Wolves were happy to move him on.

That did not appear a likely outcome until the last few days with Rovers left somewhat surprised to hear the defender could possibly be available.

John impressed sufficiently while with Rovers last season for Wolves to activate an option in his contract to keep him at Molineux for an extra season.

Having garnered interest from Championship clubs during his loan spell, it was expected that Wolves would look to send him on loan to the second tier in order to further track his development and potential.

But the West Midlands side had a change of heart over the last few days and the deal was set up with Rovers.

Boss Darren Moore had kept in regular contact with officials at Wolves in order to keep up to date on John’s availability and moved quickly to line up the permanent signing once it became a possibility.

It has been reported that the fee for John is nominal but the deal contains a large sell-on clause.
