Butler returned to the club in the summer on a short term deal until January.

He made only his second appearance of the season in Saturday’s win at Northampton Town, with a superb performance that saw him singled-out by Darren Moore for praise.

The 37-year-old was also in charge of the side for a fortnight after Moore was forced to self-isolate after contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19.

Balby-born Butler says talks with the club over his future have yet to begin but he hopes he has done enough to secure a longer stay.

“It’s up to the gaffer and the board to decide whether I’m an option for them,” he told the Free Press.

“I’d like to think I am.

“Since I’ve been back here I’ve conducted myself the way club would want me to conduct myself.

“I stepped in positions when needed.

“But again it’s up to the club.

“If they don’t want me, it’s football - one minute you’re in, one minute you’re out.

“There would never be any bad feelings.

“Whenever they want to have a chat with me we’ll sit down and discuss it.”

Butler rejoined Rovers determined to prove he could still perform to a high level in League One following a disappointing season in the division below with Scunthorpe United.

While his coaching career is developing quickly with his role as Belles manager, Butler very much still sees himself as a player and is not yet ready to retire.
