Butler has extended his initial short term deal by another six months, with the option of a further year from the summer.

He said: “I’ve loved every minute of being back. I’ve been able to play with a smile on my face and enjoy coming into training every day.

“The people around the place have made it feel like I’ve never been away, and I class all the boys as friends as well.

“I’ve played the last few games and hopefully showed people that I can still do it at a decent level. I’m still working on improving my game.

“Once I had played the game at Northampton I couldn’t stop smiling. It was good to be thrown in and test myself.”

The Doncaster-born veteran defender rejoined Rovers in August after a year away. While he was made to wait until November for his first appearance of the season, he impressed with his leadership skills off the pitch.

That was no more apparent when he stepped into the managerial role for a fortnight when Darren Moore was forced into self-isolation along with his senior coaching staff after coming into contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19.

After being handed his first league start of the season in early December, Butler has retained his place in the side ever since.

The 37-year-old continues to manage Doncaster Rovers Belles alongside his commitments with Rovers.
