Andy Butler 'has genuine opportunity' to secure Doncaster Rovers return

Sentimentality has not come into the equation in inviting Andy Butler for a trial with Doncaster Rovers, boss Darren Moore insists.

The veteran centre half has been in training with his former club for the past week and featured in the second half of Saturday’s goalless draw with Derby County.

And Moore says the 36-year-old has a genuine opportunity to earn a contract at his hometown club.

“Anyone I’m bringing in here, is for a realistic reason to look at them and see if they can fulfil a role and responsibility for the team,” Moore told the Free Press.

“I don’t bring people in for the sake of it. Can they be the one that can fill that position for me?

“He’s a good lad with great experience and he’s in excellent condition.

“We’ve brought him in as an extra central defender because at the moment we’ve got two in the building.

“It’s for us to see him and him to see us and what we’re all about.

“He’s a free transfer, he’s on the doorstep.

“We thought we’d get him in and have a look at him because it’s a position we’re looking at.

“It’s a win-win for both of us.”

Butler - who is the manager of Doncaster Rovers Belles - was released by Scunthorpe United earlier this summer, a year on from his departure from Rovers having rejected the offer of reduced terms from then-boss Grant McCann.
