Rovers have yet to make a formal approach for former loanee Iain Hume.

The Canada striker has been told to find a new club by Preston North End who are keen to offload his wages.

Rumours yesterday suggested Rovers had immediately acted and placed a £350,000 bid for the 29-year-old who spent the majority of last season on loan at the Keepmoat.

But the Star understands talks of a bid is premature.

Paul Dickov hinted recently that he may be interested in bringing Hume back to Rovers on a more permanent basis.

He said: “Humey is a player I like but he’s under contract with Preston. I haven’t spoken to Humey or Preston yet.”

Hume has a year remaining on his contract at Deepdale but Preston are keen to offload his wages.

Signed when the club were still in the Championship, Hume’s salary is now seen as a major strain on the wage budget.

He revealed via his Twitter account yesterday that he has yet to speak to Preston boss Simon Grayson, who took charge of the club while Hume was on loan at Rovers.

Hume made 36 appearances for Rovers last term, netting seven goals.

A bid as significant in value as the one rumoured for Hume is unlikely to come from Rovers who are reluctant to spend much of their player budget on anything but wages.

The Star understands Rovers were put off a move for Oldham attacking midfielder Jose Baxter with the Latics quoting a valuation of around £500,000 for the youngster.

Rovers are likely to face competition if they choose to follow up their rejected bid for Scunthorpe winger Mark Duffy.

Dickov is expected to return to Iron counterpart Brian Laws with an improved offer after his initial approach was deemed ‘well below’ the club’s valuation of the 27-year-old.

But Laws has revealed several other clubs have already enquired about Duffy.

“There’s enough interest out there to suggest there will be more bids,” he said.

Sheffield United and Barnsley are reportedly also interested in Duffy.
