The goal-kicking Scot goes into Saturday's testing game at Bedford - which marks the midway stage of the campaign - in pole position despite being dropped from the starting line-up for a couple of games following the derby defeat at Rotherham in late September.

Flockhart admits he wasn’t happy at being dropped but said: “I react well to things and I think I reacted well to that and just went back to basics which is all you can do.

“I appreciated former Wales international Gary Pearce coming across to work with me, but sometimes it can just be a case of missed kicks at the wrong times.

“I’ve been kicking for a few years now and I try not to let it affect me when I miss a kick. I’ve got a process I go through (prior to kicking at goal) and it works most times and I sort of think to myself that if I miss a kick then I’ll get the next one.

“I was top points scorer in the league at the time I was dropped which just shows how strong our squad is. It’s definitely the best Knights team since I’ve been here, and there are no egos. Director of rugby Clive Griffiths has got a good eye for talent and he knows what he is talking about when he’s selecting people.”

He added: “When I first started you had 16 teams in this league. Now it’s down to 12 and there are no easy games even though we’ve made the start we have.

“I think the difference this year is we went to Bristol expecting to win but just because we beat them doesn’t necessarily mean that we will beat the lower sides. As soon as you start thinking that then you are in real trouble.

“Bedford beat Bristol on the opening day of the season and can beat anyone in this league. We certainly won’t be under-estimating them.

“I personally love playing against Bedford and we’ve had some good games against them in recent years.”
