Doncaster Town suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions when they were beaten at Barnsley in a low scoring match.

Batting first, Town were rocked when Graeme Attenborough was clean bowled by Barnsley’s Pakistan International Zohaib Ahmad with the very first ball of the match.

Fellow opener Simon Widdup quickly followed him back to the pavilion.

However, a battling stand of 67 between Stuart Guy (40) and James Stuart (21) rescued the innings.

After Guy was dismissed the rest of the Town batsmen had no answer to the pace bowling of Ahmad (5-30) and young spinner Ali Jahinger (3-28) and the innings crashed to 110 all out from only 31.5 overs.

In reply Barnsley lost quick wickets but they passed the total in 20.5 overs, scoring 111-5. John Trower top scored with 31 and Ahmad scored 24.

Widdup was the pick of Doncaster’s bowlers, claiming 3-18.

Town travel to champions York on Saturday (noon), and visit Yorkshire League rivals Driffield on Sunday in the ECB National Cup (1pm).

n Doncaster Town B are still searching for their first win in Division Two of the South Yorkshire League after a seven wicket defeat at Oughtibridge.

Town batted first and their innings began disastrously with their first four batsmen contributing just one run between them. Joe Preece claimed all four wickets.

Skipper Matthew King (54) and Mark Dickinson (57) restored some dignity to the proceedings as Doncaster reached 158-9 at the end of their allotted overs. Preece ended with 6-40.

Oughtibridge’s first two wickets fell with just six on the scoreboard but Thomas Starkes (80) and Matthew Tyers (46no) saw them home.
