McDonnell produced an incredibly valiant effort against Rey Vargas in Hull on Saturday night, losing on a majority decision to a quality operator.

While devastated by the defeat, the Hatfield fighter declared himself proud of his performance.

And he insists his world title dream is not over.

“I’ll come again, I’ll get another shot and I’ll be world champion one day,” McDonnell said. “I said all along it’s just the start. I’ve still only had 19 fights.

“I said to [trainer] Dave Coldwell straight after to get the pads out, I want to go again.

“I’ll learn a lot from that fight, I’ll get the bit between my teeth.

“It’ll make me a strong fighter.

“When I watch it back, I’ll know I did well.

“I am proud but gutted at the same time.”

Despite knowing he was beaten, McDonnell felt he showed he can mix it at world level.

He said: “I’ve just come up short but I showed I belong at that level.

“I showed a lot of heart and I know where I went wrong.

“He’s a good champion, he’ll probably go on and have a couple of fights.

“I’ll come again and if I ever have a rematch, I know how to beat him.”
