Askern Welfare moved up to third in the top flight of the Pontefract and District Cricket League as they swept aside relegation threatened neighbours Brodsworth Main.

Askern triumphed by three wickets at Manor Way, leaving Brodsworth level on points with second bottom Hemsworth MW, who suffered a surprise defeat to bottom side Old Sharlston which brought the bottom three teams within four points of each other.

Askern lost early wickets with Andrew O’Grady holding form on his way to 25.

But their innings truly ignited with the arrival of Aaron Gillies to the crease. He posted 76 runs including nine fours as Askern finished on 182-7 after 46 overs.

Jordan Goddard claimed 4-60 as he led the Brodsworth attack.

In response, only two Brodsworth batsmen managed to reach double figures with Josh Bell's 28 leading the scoring.

With four ducks and two scores of one, they were skittled for 65 in the 33rd over.

Sachira Madapatha claimed 4-15 with Thomas Webster taking 3-5 and David Longley 3-0.
