Lifetimes of memories discovered in Doncaster family photographs dating back over 100 years

The roots of Alan Garbutt’s family tree seem thoroughly embedded in the region.

“Many of my ancestors ran local companies that people would recall.

“My step-grandfather was one of five Jefferson brothers, that would have been well known in Doncaster at the beginning of the 20th century.

“Three of them, including my step-grandfather, Herbert Jefferson, ran a transport company together, rumoured to be the first haulage firm in Goldthorpe.

“There's a Bedford House in Doncaster I believe could have had some links to my grandmother’s family, whose maiden name was Bedford. And there's a Garbutt Street in Bolton-on-Dearne I’d be very interested in learning the origins of."

Alan recently discovered a box full of photographs in the home of his father, who died last month. These images have stoked his curiosity, and a desire to learn more about the little-known faces and names pictured.

“The photos were largely taken between 1895 and 1928,” says Alan, who is originally from Bolton on Dearne.

“They're of people and streets in Goldthorpe Bolton on Dearne, and Cudworth, and were passed down to my father, Peter Garbutt, from his step-grandfather, Herbert Jefferson.

"I've been learning all I can about the Jefferson family, from scraps of newspaper and information I've uncovered, and discovered that Herbert Jefferson served in Afghanistan before returning home and taking ownership of the Jefferson Transport Company, which he ran with two of his five brothers.

Many will remember Peter Garbutt from his years running the off licence at 83 Dearne Road, and Alan is keen to hear from anyone who can shed any further information on his family history, and the photos pictured. Email [email protected] with any details.
