Europe’s oldest person has survived Covid-19, just before reaching her 117th birthday.

Lucile Randon, a French nun who took the name of Sister Andre in 1944, tested positive on 16 January, but told local media she “didn’t even realise” she had coronavirus.

Sister Andre is now fully recovered, after isolating separately from other residents in her retirement home in Toulon, southern France.

‘She is looking forward to celebrating her 117th birthday’

Speaking with France’s BFM television, Sister Andre was asked if she was scared to have the virus. She said: “No, I wasn't scared because I wasn't scared to die.

"I'm happy to be with you, but I would wish to be somewhere else - join my big brother and my grandfather and my grandmother."

Sister Andre, who is blind and used a wheelchair, was born on 11 February 1904, and is the world’s second-oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group’s (GRG) World Supercentenarian Rankings List.

Japan’s Kane Tanaka, who turned 118 on 2 January, is the oldest.

David Tavella, spokesman for the Sainte Catherine Labouré retirement home, said: “She has been very lucky.

"We consider her to be cured. She is very calm and she is looking forward to celebrating her 117th birthday.”
