‘Salmon’s Return’ is a dark beer brewed by The Sheffield Brewery Company in partnership with the Don Network to mark the success of making five weirs in the city passable for migratory fish. The work has been carried out by the Don Catchment Rivers Trust with the help of a £1.2 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

It is part of a larger project, involving the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, and The Canals and River Trust, to clean-up the waterway and make it accessible for salmon to enter for the first time in around 200 years.

Until the 18th century the River Don was considered one of the best salmon rivers in England and the fish was part of the staple diet - so much so that apprentices once had a clause in their contracts saying they could not be fed salmon more than three times a week. But with the onset of the Industrial Revolution and increased pollution, numbers started to decline.

Karen Housham, of the Don Network, said “Beer and salmon would have figured big in the diet of apprentices so this guest beer is a great way to celebrate the improvements.”
