Work rewarded at road safety Oscars

The event flowed smoothly with humour injected in to the proceedings by masters of ceremony and local television celebrities the Chuckle Brothers.

Along with the presentation of awards at the South Yorkshire Road Safety ‘Oscars’, school groups gave their own interpretations of road safety education tasks, that they had put together over several months as part of an initiative funded by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership.

This event, dubbed the ‘Roscars’, rewards pupils’ ability to deliver road safety messages to fellow students within their schools or colleges in original ways that could include a piece of theatre, an animation, a dance item or a fashion statement.

The work done by secondary age students was showcased to civic dignitaries from across South Yorkshire, along with representatives from the emergency services and the Partnership.

Awards were presented in categories as follows: Standout Performance - Horizon Community College, Teamwork - Firth Park Community College, Bright Ideas - Heatherwood School, Most imaginative direction - Ridgewood School, Best creative design - Horizon Community College, Best road safety message - Peaks College, Overall winner – Peaks College.

Further entertainment was provided by X Factor finalist Che Chesterman, along with the dance group Urban Jokers.

Joanne Wehrle, education manager for the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, said: “This is the third year the ceremony has been staged to show just how clever our local students are. They not only grasp the road safety messages but then wrap them into brilliant performances that can be passed on to their fellow students.” The event received funds from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
