Wizz on down to catch veteran

That is the route taken by veteran acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter Wizz Jones who brings his folk sound to South Yorkshire this week.

The 77-year-old is the next act to appear at Doncaster’s Roots Music Club.

A club spokesman said: “Wizz learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry while playing in the coffee bars of Soho in London in thelate 1950s.

“He then followed the time-honoured buskers’ trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakesh in Morocco during the early 1960s, sometimes playing with other musicians including a budding young blues man named Rod Stewart. “Wizz eventually returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style.”

“After more than 50 years on the road, Wizz continues to tour on the acoustic folk and blues circuit and it’s an honour to have him playing in Doncaster.

Wizz Jones plays The Roots Music Club, The Ukrainian Centre, Beckett Road, Doncaster town centre, on Friday, June 3, from 7.30pm.
