Witnesses to M18 incident sought

Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision that occurred this morning on the M18.

At 6.55am a Mercedes Actros road tanker was travelling southbound along the M18 between junctions 2 and 1 when it was in collision with a man who is believed to have fallen from the bridge at Cockhill Lane, Old Edlington.

The 44-year-old local man, who has not yet been named, was then hit by a yellow Mercedes van as he lay in the carriageway. He died from his injuries.

Any witnesses – either on the M18 or Cockhill Lane – or anyone who saw the man prior to the incident is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 01142 202020 quoting incident number 179 of 3 June 2011.

The southbound carriageway was closed for several hours following the incident re-opening around 10.30am.
