Why the rush to finish at lunch for holidays?

However, I am at a loss to understand why so many schools now finish at lunch-time before beginning a six week holiday and indeed for other holidays too. Why?

I presume there is a valid reason but it seems terribly unfair, creating an extra burden for working, loving parents, struggling to manage work and child care over the six week school holidays.

Being retired now for a few years I’ve probably lost the plot but I’d love to know the reason! Can anyone provide the answer?
