The image, which shows the 50-year-old politician talking to a woman, was printed on the poster and placed underneath the headline: 'Upgrades on the horizon' at Las Vegas Airport.

It appeared to be photoshopped onto the poster, put up to let passengers know about an ongoing renovation project which includes new flooring, wall coverings and lighting.

Garth Jennings uploaded the picture of the poster to his Twitter page and asked the airport if they were 'aware' they had used the Hallam MP on their posters

However, they said had 'no idea' that the man on the poster was the former Liberal Democrats leader and explained they simply used pictures provided by an architect.

Mr Clegg was seen standing on a carpet at the airport and the picture looked like it was taken from inside a plane.

Music video director Garth Jennings tweeted the picture and wrote: 'Note to Las Vegas airport. Are you aware you've used Nick Clegg on your maintenance posters?'

A spokeswoman for the airport said the picture and poster was made using images provided by an architect.

She said: "The sign in question has been in place to alert passengers of an ongoing renovation project within the airport's ticketing and baggage claim areas.

"The artwork used was one of several images our graphic artists borrowed from a presentation originally created by the architecture firm that handled these renovations on behalf of the airport.

"We had no knowledge of who the man in this image was, nor can we identify any of the other persons/images used for this or other similar signs. We merely reused the renderings that our architect gave us."

It comes just three months after a photograph of former Labour leader and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband blowing his nose was used by a US TV channel for a feature about a flu epidemic.

As the presenter warned that 'flu season has arrived', a picture of Mr Miliband wielding a white handkerchief went up on screen among other stock images.

The photo was from 2011, when it was taken during a round of TV interviews at party conference.
